I'll bite.

I always had the impression that this kind of stuff went on. When I was working in the food industry (line cook at a pizza place), I was fortunate enough to have good management that would send people home if they were sick. They would rather us be understaffed than making customers sick too.

The only time I was told to suck it up was when I was sunburnt really bad and that was arguably my fault.

When I was working in the food industry (manager at a pizza place) I kept things on the level. Each employee had a list of the other employees' numbers, so if they called in - and were good enough to talk on the phone - I'd just put it on them to find someone to cover their shift. Reasonable yet stern, and taught good responsibility.

My employees loved me. I was even thanked by an employee when I was forced to fire them.

As long as you don't fire people for calling in sick when they really are sick, you have nothing to worry about. It's a great article.

Being fired for needing to call out sick is unacceptable regardless of gender.

while true there is always people looking for work. It's like junking an old car that can be fixed. It can be done but you don't wanna take the time to do it. So you get rid of it instead of waiting on it to get fixed

12 years in the industry and an HR rep in one now. I HAVE TO FORCE EMPLOYEES TO LEAVE. Cooks and servers will hide the fact they are getting sick in the bathroom so they don't lose money. I also have run across many mgrs that will pressure staff to stay

Well then MAYBE you should offer paid sick days, so they can afford to call out when they need to without worrying about losing money.

Even worse is when they get fired for getting sick and staying home.
